HENDERSONVILLE - Fans and players of the Sumner County Rugby Football team will no longer travel to Goodlettsville or Brentwood for home matches.
The team officially opened their new home off Avant Lane in Hendersonville this past Saturday.
The project, spearheaded by head coach Brian Silkwood, began September 11, 2019.
The home field's addition will bring teams from all over the state, as State Director Al Overton says Sumner County and the Tennessee Rugby Association are working on an agreement to host future state championships.
“We don’t have anything close to this in the Middle Tennessee area that is directly associated with a team; everything else is borrowed,” Overton said. “West Tennessee has two fields, and out east, you have three fields that work with the University of Tennessee, so from a state standpoint, it works out great because now we get to bring in teams from across the state.”
The Tennessee Rugby Association has three levels of competition for the state championships. A team qualifies for the state tournament through conference qualifying games after the regular season is concluded.
From top to bottom, teams will either compete for the Cup, Bowl or Plate.
As for Sumner RFC, the team has one plate division championship (2012) and two bowl championships (2017-2018). They finished runner up in the plate division 2015-2016 and finished as bowl runner up in 2019.
Sumner RFC is proud to recognize their lone USA Rugby High School All American, Cameron Tompkins, who has achieved the club's highest individual honor to date.
Tucker Been, Cameron Tompkins, Colby Pearl, Jacob Kinman, Grant Silkwood, Eli Riley and Alex Dillard were all selected to play for USA Rugby South, a U19 team composed of players from multi-state areas.
Jacob Kinman (BYU), Ian Anderson (Coastal Carolina), Tyler Dang (Coastal Carolina), Ryan Meade (ETSU), Austin Morris (Lee), Tucker Been (Lee), Mason McCracken, Colby Pearl, Zane Swinger, AJ Hart (MTSU), Tanner Carr (UTC), Patrick No, Creighton Couch, Will Ring, Josh Shelter, Walker Helms and Jacob Eiche (UTK), Mitch Garcia, Jon Russell, Cameron Tompkins, AJ Hart, Peyton Sevigny and Keegan Ballinger (WKU) have all signed scholarships to play rugby at the college level.
