Main Street Preps names 2019-2020 All-Sumner County girls basketball teams

The Gallatin News, Hendersonville Standard and the Portland Sun, which are under the Main Street Preps umbrella, has named their All-Sumner County basketball teams.

Beech senior Deshiya Hoosier earned Player of the Year honors for helping lead her team to the Class AAA sectional round.

The four teams are comprised of nine Sumner County schools including Beech, Gallatin, Hendersonville, Merrol Hyde, Pope John Paul II, Portland, Station Camp, Westmoreland, and White House.

We have also named superlatives for Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Team of the Year.

Nominations and statistics were sent in by the coaches, and the Main Street Preps staff made the final decisions.

The full teams are listed below.

Player of the Year: Deshiya Hoosier, Beech

Why chosen: Hoosier led the Lady Bucs this season in almost every offensive category. She was named the District 9-AAA regular season Most Valuable Player, named to the District 9-AAA tournament team, and the Region 5-AAA tournament team. She was the Lady Bucs’ main option this season and still, she could not be stopped in league play. She is committed to Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Team of the Year: Westmoreland Eagles

Why Chosen: The Lady Eagles enjoyed a 29-5 record and a trip to the Class AA sub-state round where they fell to state semifinalist Nolensville by four points. The Eagles were crowned District 9-AA regular season and tournament champions. The team enjoyed two win streaks of 10 more more wins including a 16-game win streak from Jan. 7 through March 2.

Coach of the Year: Jerry Landers, Gallatin

Why Chosen: Landers led Gallatin to their best record in 20 years going 21-10. The team also finished in third place in the District 9-AAA tournament, their best finish since 2002.

Student-Athlete of the Year: Daley McCloud, Portland

Why Chosen: Along with being a four year member of the basketball and softball teams at Portland High School, Daley is a member of BETA and the National Honor’s Society. She carries a 3.96 GPA and a 4.0 GPA in college courses through Volunteer State. She scored a 26 on her ACT and has plans to attend Volunteer State CC on the Hope Scholarship. She is a vital volunteer coach in the youth league and the community in Portland the last two years.

She is committed to Jacksonville University.

Why Chosen: Dean, much like Hoosier, was asked to pick up her production this season when teammate Jana Claire Swafford went down with a knee injury before the season started. She responded by leading the team in assists. She also became the first player in school history to record 1,000 points and 500 assists in her career.

Why Chosen: Morris led her team with 14 points per game, 5 assists per game, and 3 steals per game while collecting over 100 rebounds at the point guard position. She was named the District 9-AA regular season and tournament Most Valuable Player and was named to the Region 5-AA All-Region team.
