GALLATIN — The Wilson Central tennis teams opened up District 9-Large play by polishing off Portland with a pair of 7-0 wins Monday afternoon at Volunteer State Community College.

WCHS picked up its second win seven games into last season, but has started out with a pair of victories out of the gate.

Wildcat sophomore Caleb Brown believes the early success is a reflection of the squad that features seven freshmen and sophomores.

“I think every player has grown a lot since last year, and I think that the freshmen have progressed a lot since the fall,” Brown said.

“Everyone is hitting with a lot more shape and getting more consistent on their shots which helps us stay in rallies.”

Senior Abby Moser feels like momentum is already on the side of the Lady Wildcats as a veteran squad returns on the girls side.

“It feels really great to come out with the win last week, and the district win today – hopefully it will be a consistent pattern,” Moser said.

“I think we’re doing good right now, and we’re coming together as a team which is the most important key for our season.”

The Lady Wildcats opened play by sweeping all five singles courts starting with Moser who claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win at one singles.

Junior Kiersten Moss and freshman Erin Tucker picked up a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins at number two and five singles, respectively.

Junior Hannah Spoon garnered a 6-0, 6-1 win at number three singles while freshman Samantha Stephens polished off singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the number four spot.

The duo of Moser and Moss dropped Portland’s Rebecca Rigsby and Mayleigh Douglas 8-0 at the number one doubles position.

Tucker and freshman Carolyn Allison completed the sweep at number two doubles with an 8-0 win over Halie Griggs and Miranda Rigsby.

Brown earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ian Wells at number one singles.

Freshmen Sean Brown and Blaine Smith picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins at number two and three singles, respectively.

Sean Brown and Smith took care of Wells and Tiller 8-0 at one doubles.

Portland forfeited number four and five singles and number two doubles due to a lack of players.

“I think we’re on a high right now, and I hope we can keep it rolling throughout the season as long as we perform against everyone like we can,” Moser said.

Added Caleb Brown, “It’s been great and I love this team. I have a good feeling about how we’re coming together and I believe it’ll keep going because we’re working very hard.”

Wilson Central will be in action Tuesday as the Wildcats travel to Beech for the team’s second district matchup.

The Wildcats host Siegel Wednesday for the first home game of the season. Both matches are slated to start at 4 p.m.
