The Portland Lady Panthers improved to 3-0 Tuesday night after a 46-34 home win over White House.
Portland was led by Sami Parker, who finished with a game-high 19 points. Parker scored nine of her team’s first 12 points to begin the game.
“I think the biggest thing for us tonight was that we didn’t flinch,” Portland coach Scott Steinbrecher said. “We knew that White House was a good basketball team and that they would hit back and make plays.
“Our whole mindset was that when we did not flinch, to just go back and make another play. I really think Sami’s play fed into the rest of our team early on, and they played hard for each other.”
After trailing for much of the first quarter, a three-pointer from Avery Droz game the Lady Devils a 13-12 lead. Portland then responded with an 11-point run to take a 23-13 advantage.
The 10-point second quarter spurt for Portland ultimately proved the difference, as the Lady Panthers never trailed the remainder of the game.
After a basket from Chloe Hart late in the third cut White House’s deficit to four, Lexie Williams hit a three at the third quarter buzzer to increase Portland’s lead to seven and help prevent a Lady Devils comeback attempt in the fourth quarter.
“We really struggled with some fatigue after playing (Monday) night,” White House coach Kelly Smelcer said. “There was a lot of physical fatigue that led to mental fatigue, which led to execution errors. But the bottom line is that we missed 15 opportunities at the free throw line. That was kind of the story of the game.”
Portland will return home on Tuesday, Dec. 3 to face Greenbrier, while White House will host Springfield at home on Monday, Dec. 2.
