The TSSAA has officially canceled spring sports for the 2020 school year. With that comes the abrupt end for seniors across the county. Some will have the luxury of moving on to play college ball in their respective sports, but the harsh reality is that most kids will never get to play the game they grew up loving anymore.

We at Main Street Preps want to do something to honor these seniors. It is not much, but we are hopeful these senior spotlights will shed light on stellar careers enjoyed on the fields.

This particular article will focus on the Portland Panthers soccer seniors: Patrick Valiente, Jacob Johnson, Bishop Troutt, Frank Juan Gasper, Landon Walters, Damian Luna and Reymon Betancur.

Head coach Tanner Nelson said of the following via the team’s official Twitter page.

Damian Luna played for Portland for four years, captaining the team team for the last two.

“He has been a consistent backbone of the varsity team in defense and midfield his entire high school career. He is a great leader by example as he broke several team conditioning records.”

Reymon Betancur has played one season for Portland.

“He seamlessly entered the team with his joyful and charismatic personality, quickly learning the principles of defending to develop into a center back. He is strong, enthusiastic and earnest, he has improved greatly.”

Landon Walters has played three years for Portland, captaining the team for the last two.

“His passion and commitment to the game have fueled him. He has progressed into a skilled play-maker and vocal leader for the varsity team as a midfielder and forward.”

Frank Juan Gaspar has played two season for Portland.

“He has thrived in the varsity as a defensive-minded midfielder with a bit of goal-scoring touch. Technically-gifted, determined and loyal, he has been an invaluable leader.”

Bishop Troutt has played for Portland the last four years.

“He quickly began contributing to the varsity team in his first couple seasons and has been a cornerstone of the defense ever since. Quiet, determined and smart, he defends and reads the game extremely well.”

Jacob Johnson has played for Portland the last four years.

“He has been a prolific player and goalscorer, leading and contributing to just about every field position along the way. Brave, influential and full of flair, he is always ready to take players on.”

Patrick Valiente has played one season for Portland.

“Through his work ethic and drive to learn, he was able to absorb knowledge for several positions, largely contributing as a defender. Athletically-gifted and strong, he has been a surprise addition to the leadership here.”
