PORTLAND - A tough defensive battle between the Portland and Greenbrier boys basketball teams went back-and-forth for four quarters with the Bobcats coming out on top in overtime with a 48-46 win.
After Portland jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first quarter, the Bobcats came back to retake the lead before the half, 18-16. A three-pointer from Hunter Thaxton and eight points from Carter Preston sparked the run.
“This was a great team victory for us,” Greenbrier coach Kenton Coleman said. “They really came together and were engaged all night long. We talked before the game how we wanted to get it inside to Devin (Blankenship) and Carter and the perimeter players did a really good job of finding them at the right time.”
The second half saw eleven lead changes as neither team led by more than two points. After a field goal from Dawson Kennedy gave Portland a 39-37 advantage with under a minute remaining, Greenbrier tied the game in the final seconds with a basket from Tristan Eakes that sent the game into overtime.
The overtime period was mostly a contest of foul shots for both teams. Carter Preston hit three, including the final one that gave Greenbrier a 48-46 lead with less than a second remaining to seal the win for the Bobcats.
“We just had a lot of shots tonight that didn’t fall,” Portland coach Justin Martin said. “The zone gave us some trouble, but I didn’t think we played all that bad. The effort was there, it was just some crucial shots that didn’t fall.”
Both Greenbrier teams will now move on to host Jo Byrns at home Friday, while Portland hosts district opponent Gallatin at home.
