Grand Slam powers Portland past Wilson Central

PORTLAND – The Lady Panther softball team closed out the regular season with fireworks Friday night, downing district foe Wilson Central 10-5.

Up 6-5 in the sixth inning and facing an 0-1 count, Abbie Tomlinson blasted a grand slam to right field, scoring Lexe Conyer, Rachel Jennings and Mackenzie Hodges and sealing the 10-5 victory for PHS.

After Wilson Central started the game with three runs, Portland scored four in the home-half of the first inning on singles from Tomlinson, Mac Fitzgerald and Anna Herrera.

In the end, Portland finished with a game-high 11 hits, while pitcher Mac Fitzgerald earned the win in the circle. The sophomore pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out three.

The Panthers take sixth place in the final District 9-AAA standings meaning they will travel to No. 3 seed Lebanon on Monday, May 7 for their opening game.
