Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (CEMC) announced on June 23 that the Portland office including the lobby and drive-thru window would be closed until further notice.

On June 24, The Portland Sun received a response from Communications Coordinator Julie Wallace stating that the closure was the result of a CEMC employee testing positively for COVID-19 as precautions to preventing the spread of the virus.

General Manager Chris A. Davis was quoted in the press release stating, “The health and safety of our employees is always our number one priority. We are saddened to learn of our team member’s illness and are committed to supporting them and their family during this time

“While this is a concerning development, it will not significantly impact CEMC’s ability to continue essential operations and business functions. We are taking the temporary action to close the Portland District Office in an abundance of caution to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

According to the press release, the employee was last in the office on June 19. CEMC is currently in the process of notifying other employees who came in contact with this individual as part of their job and will ask them to follow recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.

Members of CEMC will continue to have access to the call center at 800-987-2362 during regular business hours. They can also manage their accounts through electronic methods such as SmartHub mobile app or online at CEMC.com. Members also have the option to visit another CEMC office.
