The Tennessee State Museum explores the rich and diverse history of Tennessee’s food through a new exhibition, Let’s Eat! Origins and Evolutions of Tennessee Food, open now through Feb. 2, 2020, at the Museum’s Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park location in Nashville.
Among the many stories told in the exhibition through artifacts, images, interactive activities and videos, is the story of the Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival. Portland hosts the Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival each year in mid-May. The festival started in 1941 and continues today, bringing 25,000+ people together to celebrate the importance of the strawberry industry to Portland's heritage.
The display is complemented by a photo of an unidentified girl picking strawberries at the Portland Strawberry Festival in 1950, and an original copy of the Portland Strawberry Festival program from 1954.
