Despite the pandemic, several parents were dedicated to providing a prom for Portland High School juniors and seniors.
According to Rena Brackin-Loza, the parents went forth with the 2020 Prom because they thought the students deserved it this year considering everything they have not been allowed to do. The PHS prom is traditionally a parent-initiated activity and not a school function.
This year due to the generosity of many sponsors, tickets to the prom were free.
Brackin-Loza said, “We are just so thankful for all the sponsors in town. We would love to continue sponsorships so tickets can be at a lower price. I can’t say enough about our committee. They were phenomenal. They made it the best prom ever.”
Over 300 registered online to attend to attend the event, held at The Barn at Spring Lake. Kaleb Allen was chosen king and Addison Dorris was chosen queen.
Students were asked to practice social distancing while socializing and dancing; however, it was ultimately their decision. They were not required to wear masks
Zachary Colovos said, “I had a great time and it was amazing to see many of my friends after such a long time away from each other. It almost felt like the last day of school that we never had. I think all that attended really needed to have another event as it provided some sense of closure before we all went our separate ways.”
