It was a day to celebrate at The Meadows at Halltown Assisted Living when John Bridges Lindsley celebrated his 100th birthday on Sept. 7.

Administrator Danette Wilson said it has been an honor to be able to take care of such a genuine gentleman overflowing with wisdom.

Lindsley followed two vocations. He served as principal of Vena Stuart Elementary in Gallatin for a number of years during the 1960s. While he enjoyed being an educator, his first love was serving as pastor of two Free Will Baptist Churches, which he was instrumental in establishing.

One was in Portland and the other is in Hendersonville and both churches are still thriving today.

He had attended a Bible college and is known for being able to quote many scriptures from memory. Some say he almost has the whole Bible memorized.

Portland Mayor Mike Callis said, “John baptized my wife and me together, and he got preaching appointments set for me after I accepted the call. John had memorized large portions of the Bible and was so willing to help and teach others. He has been a great friend and example.”

He also served four years in the. U. S. Army during World War II in France, Italy, Germany, Africa, and several other places abroad.

He was married to Sadie Taylor Lindsley. While they had no children, they were blessed with several nieces and nephews, who are active in his life.

Lindsley credits his longevity to serving a loving God.
