Tragedy struck the quiet community around the Oak Grove area on Sunday, July 18, when a six-year-old boy was accidentally shot.

Sumner County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call around 9:30 a.m. to an address on Fairfield Road. The boy did not survive his injuries and passed away at a Nashville hospital.

According to Chief Deputy Aaron Pickard, the investigation conducted by deputies and detectives determined that the shooting was purely accidental.

Pickard added that the sheriff’s office prays and grieves for this family, and asks that the family be given privacy as they deal with this horrible situation. He also asks that the first responders, who did their best for the young man, be remembered.

The sheriff’s department does not expect to release any further details.

The boy was a student at Westmoreland Elementary School.
