Sumner County native Guy Jones was sworn in as the new executive director of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference last week.

The ceremony was held Aug. 3 in Sumner County Criminal Court Judge Dee David Gay’s courtroom in Gallatin.

Prior to becoming executive director, Jones had served as deputy director of the conference since 1997. He succeeds Jerry Estes, who recently retired.

“It’s very humbling that the district attorneys whom I have the utmost respect for would elect me,” Jones said following the ceremony. “The greatest work that I’ve been able to be involved in is supporting (them) as they seek justice and try to bring healing to victims.”

During his time as deputy director, Jones was primarily responsible for developing, managing and securing legislative approval of the conference’s budget; overseeing public education and community outreach efforts; serving as a liaison with various law enforcement and government agencies; and advising and supporting district attorneys and their staffs, according to a news release.

He also managed legislative approval of numerous conference initiatives like strengthening reporting and punishment of child sexual abuse; broadening homicide to include deaths due to illegal drug trade; creating greater protection for domestic violence victims; and multi-year efforts to enact elder abuse protection laws.

Jones was recognized for his work in 2010 when he received the conference’s highest honor, the Patrick H. McCutchen Award. He also guided three public education efforts, which included the nationally recognized “Meth Destroys” campaign that was awarded a Silver Anvil Award.

“I don’t think that anybody associated with the criminal justice system in Tennessee and the district attorneys could say that there is a better, more qualified person than Guy,” Gay said about Jones becoming executive director of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference.

A graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and Nashville School of Law, Jones is a lifelong Sumner County resident who has remained actively involved in the local community.

He served on the Sumner County Commission from 1982 until 1990 and is a past chairman of the Sumner County Highway Commission and the board of directors for the Sumner County Resource Authority.

He also serves as a deacon and treasurer at First Baptist Church Gallatin and has traveled to Ecuador numerous times on mission trips.

“Our team could not imagine someone better for the executive director position than Guy,” Gen. Amy Weirich, 2020–21 executive committee president, said in prepared statement. “He has been a vital asset to our team for over 20 years, and I know he’ll be instrumental in our continued growth as a conference.”

In addition to his time with the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference, Jones also continues operation of a family beef cattle farm. He lives in Gallatin with his wife Leigh Ann and their daughter Mary Hannah.
