City leaders approved the following items at the City of Portland Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting on July 30.

Financial Aid for Nonprofit Charitable Organizations

Thirteen non-profit organizations were given a total of $75,925. The amount designated each year is one percent of the fiscal budget.

The Portland Public Library will receive the largest donation of $27,500 with the Portland Chamber of Commerce receiving $20,000. Portland C.A.R.E.S. will receive $7,000, the Portland Senior Citizens $6,000, Mid-Cumberland Human Agency $5,000, and HomeSafe in Sumner County $3,000.

Other donations will be given to Sumner County Vietnam Veterans Chapter 240 in the amount of $925, Habilitation & Training Services (HATS) $1,000, Sumner County CASA $1,000, Highland Rim Historical Society $1,500, Salvus Center, Inc. $1,000, Sumner Spay Neuter Alliance $1,000, and Portland Little League Baseball $1,000.

These organizations provide needed services for residents of the city, which the city is unable to provide. There is approximately $9,000 left in the fiscal budget for 2019 for non-profits.

The Tennessee Code Annotated gives cities the ability to authorize appropriations for financial aid for nonprofit charitable organizations whose services benefit the general welfare of the residents of the cities.

City Planner

Richard Donovan was hired as the city planner. He comes from the City of Lebanon where he is currently with the planning department as principle planner. He is schedule to begin in September.

Public Safety

The board voted to donate a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria to the Highland Volunteer Fire Department. The car is valued at $1,200.

Legislative

The BOMA voted to purchase additional Christmas decorations for the upcoming holidays, saying many of the current decorations were old and in need of repair. In 2017, they began updating the city’s Christmas decorations and voted to spend no more than $15,000 to add to last year’s purchases. The Christmas decoration committee met on Thursday, Aug. 9 to begin the selection.

The Sumner County E-911 Office has been given the authority to assign addresses in the City of Portland. This is advantageous because it will help alleviate duplicate and/or too-similar street names/numbers from being assigned. This should decrease the chances of error in dispatching.
