First Baptist Church of Portland held a Clothes Closet Summer Clothing Giveaway June 27. The church has an auxiliary house for a clothing ministry. It has been serving the community for several years; but has not been open since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The house was stocked with clothing donated by church members and the community. The church decided to have an outdoor clothing giveaway in the yard of the house. The event was well attended with many people from the community leaving with a good supply of clothing. Social distancing was in place and those coming were asked to wear masks.
June Hinton who works with the clothing house was pleased with the amount of clothing they were able to give to those who came. Most of the inventory of clothing was given away.
Hinton said, “We couldn’t keep up with how many people we serviced. We didn’t have very much left to take back into the building and people left with bags full. It was a great day. The weather was perfect and the shoppers were so appreciative. We’d never made it happen without so many hard-working volunteers.”
No decision has been made in regards to reopening the clothing house during the pandemic. According to Hinton, they haven’t been back to the house to evaluate what is left.
Pastor Tim Colovos said, “It is a joy as a pastor to see the members of the church take ownership in a ministry of the church. Mrs. June Hinton and her team of helpers were the hands and feet of Christ in this event to hundreds of people in our community.
