Portland Church of Christ has chosen Sam Thrasher to be youth director.
Thrasher is a May graduate of Freed Hardeman University with a major in Youth and Family Ministry. He was active in Christian social clubs as a college student and served as president of Chi Beta Chi.
Thrasher grew up in Alabama where his grandfather was a strong religious influence on him. He became involved in church activities as a junior in high school when Allen and Melissa Webster took him under their wings and encouraged him. He became a Christian six months after studying with them. Allen Webster serves as minister of Jacksonville Church of Christ in Alabama.
According to Thrasher, his Portland ministry will focus on helping everybody he comes in contact with to get to know God better. He said he is willing to do whatever it takes to make it possible.
Shortly after moving to Portland, he immediately jumped into his work by going to Bible camp with about 25 children from the area. At camp, he taught Bible lessons and participated in other activities. He became known as the camp storyteller; telling stories about his life experiences each night.
“Having a week with the kids and some of the parents helped me get to know them. It helped to get to know where they are,” Thrasher said.
Thrasher’s favorite Bible verse is Zephaniah 3:17: The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing” (NKJV).
“He spoke everything into existence and so when he sings, what image would that be? What would it sound like to hear God sing? It is such a unique image painted that you don’t find anywhere else in the Scriptures,” Thrasher said.
Thrasher invites anyone to come by and visit, especially any youth looking for a youth group to be a part of. He would love for them to come by and be a part of the church family at Portland Church of Christ.
