TCAT offering 2 new programs

Two new programs are scheduled to begin with the fall semester at Tennessee College of Applied Technology Nashville – Portland Campus. The college will add Cosmetology and Building Construction.

The Cosmetology program provides training for students to learn a life-long trade and prepares them toward a successful score on the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology Licensing Exam. Students must complete 1500 hours of training which is estimated to be a 16 month program.

Christina Heard will be the associate instructor, who joins Portland TCAT after serving in the same position in Springfield. Heard developed a strong program at Springfield where her students earned two gold medal state awards and one national bronze in cosmetology, three state goal medals in nail care, one silver state medal and one national bronze medal in aesthetics, and one state goal medal and one bronze national medal in leadership competition during competition in SkillsUSA.

Heard said, “I am excited they want me to start Cosmetology at Portland. The program will be the same as the Springfield program. Students can get a life-long career.”

Building Construction Technology will provide skills for students to work in the building construction business. The program is approximately 20 months and students must complete 2,160 hours. Students can earn a carpenter helper certificate (432 hours), carpenter diploma (1,296 hours), electrician helper certificate (2,160 Hours), plumber helper certificate (1,728 hours), and general construction diploma (2,160 hours). An electrician helper and plumber helper can earn a certificate award for completion of 432 hours. The school is currently interviewing applicants for the position of associate instructor for the program.
