The family of legendary Portland basketball coach Carl Fussell has established a scholarship in his name.

Fussell, who died Nov. 12 at age 89, coached the Portland Lady Panthers for some of their best seasons in the program’s history in the 1960s and ‘70s, will have a scholarship that bears his name that will go to a senior female athlete at Portland High School.

Fussell’s wife of 60 years, Bonnie Fussell, is a reporter for the Portland Sun.

According to the family’s Facebook post, the scholarship recipient will be an athlete who embodies a “love of the game” attitude as well as Coach Fussell’s values of integrity, discipline, determination and a team-first attitude both on the court and in the classroom.

The total amount of the scholarship will be determined by the amount of donations toward the scholarship.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so via mail, Venmo or can be hand-delivered.

Checks can be made out to the Farmers Bank with the memo line that the funds are for the “Carl Fussell Memorial Scholarship.”

Checks can be mailed to The Farmers Bank, 120 Village Drive, Portland, TN 37148.

Donations can also be made through Venmo at the following tag: @Carl-Fussell-Scholarship.
