Halloween at the Library – All Day Halloween Fun on Thursday, October 31.
All day you can hunt for the hidden item, guess the jar, make felt monsters at our play station, color Halloween pictures, trick-or-treat and take your picture in your Halloween costume by different photo op areas.
Specific Activities on Halloween Day
10:30 Halloween stories for pre-schoolers
11:00 Halloween games for pre-schoolers
12:00 – 3:00 A variety of market/take it craft projects to do on your own plus word searches and other puzzle pages as supplies last.
3:30 Using “madlib” format, help create Halloween stories, (school age sudents are the target age)
4:00 “Scary stories around the fake campfire (School age, “brave” students are the target age)
4:00 Is also when there will be programming specifically for middle and high school students.

Tuesday, October 1st through Saturday, October 19th Friends of the Library Silent Auction
The Friends of the Library will be hosting a silent auction at the library for three weeks. You can bid on the items on display in the gallery of the library. There is an amazing array of items including gift cards to local businesses, crocheted items, household items and much, much more. On Saturday, October 19th at noon, the highest bidder gets the item. Come do some of your Christmas shopping at the library. All of the money raised goes toward all programming at the library including the Summer Reading Program
Tuesday, October 1st, 8th and 15th Dining with Diabetes – (You must sign up)
4:30 to 5:30 This is an interactive learning program designed for people with diabetes or those at risk for diabetes. The Dining with Diabetes educational series will help you gain cooking skills and tools needed to follow a diet plan for diabetes. During the Fall Series, we will focus on using fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season for our recipes. Small food samples will be provided at each lesson. All family members can benefit from this healthy eating program! Please contact the library for more information and to sign up at 615-325-2279.
Wednesday, October 2nd Line Dancing Class
1:00 to 2:30 Would you like to learn to line dance? If so, join us at the Portland Public Library on Wednesday October 2nd from 1:00 to 2:30 and Patty Gribovicz will instruct you on such dances as the Electric Slide, Boot Scootin’ Boogie and Cotton Eye Joe to name a few. Patty was an instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio for three years. Beginners will be given instruction from 1:00 to 1:30, line dancing from 1:30 to 2:00 and social dancing from 2:00 to 2:30. This is a free event!
Friday, October 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th Lucky Library Bingo
1:00 to 2:00 Please join us at the Portland Public Library to play Bingo. We will begin playing at 1:00 in the community room. No cash prizes, but we give away food, books, gift cards and more!
Saturday, October 5th Genealogy Club
10:30 to 12:30 Saturday, October 5th the Portland Genealogy Club will meet at the Portland Public Library. We will continue to work on “Busting Brick Walls” for our study. Refreshments will be served. Come join us!
Tuesday, October 8th Crafternoon!
1:00 to 4:00 Please join us on the second and fourth Tuesday, between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 for Crafternoon! You may bring your craft projects to the library to work on with other crafters. This could be anything from crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, quilting, painting, making cards, scrapbooking, coloring or others.
You must bring your own sewing machine, if applicable, and supplies. If you are currently working on a project, please bring it with you to work on. This is a great opportunity for like-minded crafters to get together and learn from each other. On occasion, we will have a crafter come in to teach something new if you would like to learn. Contact the library at 615-325-2279 or stop by the front desk for any questions.

12:30 to 2:30 Please join us in the community room at the library for afternoon tea and a movie. We will be watching Hocus Pocus. This event is free and open to everyone.

Overdue Library Materials? Relax! The last Friday of every month has been declared FINE FREE FRIDAY at the Portland Library. Fines will not be charged for any overdue library materials returned on the last Friday of the month.
Saturday, October 26th Family Movie Matinee

TEEN ACTIVITIES

Thursday, October 3rd Choose Your Own Adventure: Project UFO
4:00 to 5:00 Based on the popular 80s and 90s Choose Your Own Adventure books, you will be going on an adventure through the galaxy. You alone are in charge of what happens to earth but be careful, the wrong decision could leave our plant doomed.
Tuesday, October 8th Gaming in the Teen Space
3:30 to 5:00 The Nintendo Switch will be set up in the Teen Space and will be available for teens in 6th through 12th grade from 3:30 to 5:00.
Thursday, October 10th Interactive Movie Screening – Hocus Pocus
4:00 to 5:45 Join us for an interactive movie screening from 4:00 – 5:45. Popcorn, candy and drinks will be served. This movie is rated PG.
Thursday, October 17th Frankentoys
4:00 to 5:00 With a little bit of glue and paint, turn childhood toys into a totally new creation.
Thursday, October 24th DIY Wreck This Journal
4:00 to 5:00 Inspired by Keri Smith’s Wreck This Journal, we will be creating our own journals to destroy. A Copy of the original Wreck This Journal will be awarded to one lucky student.
Thursday, October 31st All Hallow’s Eve at th’ Cove Inn
4:00-5:30 Ahoy t’ th’ Cove Inn, a gatherin’ place fer pirates all o’er th’ world since 1753. Tonight on All Hallows’ Eve, enjoy special grub, crafts, cannonball fights, ‘n loot. This program runs from 4:00-5:30.

Lapsit (ages infants and toddlers) Meets on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Friday, October 4th It’s all about cleaning up! Picking up – taking baths! Stories, songs, rhymes and stickers.
Friday, October 11th BUMPY rides. In cars, carriages, trains and on the bus! Stories, songs, rhymes and FUN!
Friday, October 18th Humpty Dumpty Sat on the Wall. Songs, stories, rhymes, and a sticker page.
Friday, October 25th Halloween books, poems, songs and finger plays. With a sticker page at the end.
