Food For Fines All Month     For the entire month of August, the Portland Library will be accepting food for forgiveness of your library overdue fines.  For each nonperishable food item or hygiene product that you bring to the library with a 6 month or more expiration date, you will receive $1.00 off of your overdue fines.  The donated items will go to two local organizations – Portland High School Food Pantry and Portland C.A.R.E.S.  A wish list for each can be found at the front desk.

 

Friday, August  9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th       Lucky Library Bingo

1:00 to 2:00    Please join us at the Portland Public Library to play Bingo.  We will begin playing at 1:00 in the community room.  No cash prizes, but we give away food, books, gift cards and more!  

Tuesday, August 13th    Crafternoon!

1:00 to 4:00 Please join us on the second and fourth Tuesday, between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 for Crafternoon!  You may bring your craft projects to the library to work on with other crafters.  This could be anything from crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, quilting, painting, making cards, scrapbooking, coloring or others. 

You must bring your own sewing machine, if applicable, and supplies. If you are currently working on a project, please bring it with you to work on.  This is a great opportunity for like-minded crafters to get together and learn from each other.  On occasion, we will have a crafter come in to teach something new if you would like to learn. Contact the library at 615-325-2279 or stop by the front desk for any questions.

Wednesday, August 14th  Classic Movie Time

1:00 to 3:00   Please join us in the community room at the library for afternoon tea and a movie.  We will be watching “The Age of Adeline ”.  This event is free and open to everyone.    

 

 

Thursday, August 15th  Book Club

11:30 to 1:00   Please join us if you love to read. We will be reading “Once Upon A River” by Diane Satterfield.  Please call the library today to reserve your copy at 615-325-2279. 

 

Saturday, August 17th    Tea Time at the Library

11:00 to 1:00   This is a social event, as the taking and offering of tea signifies friendship and a chance to visit with old friends and make new ones.  This program requires no invitation or reservation.  Simply bring a batch of your favorite sweet or savory to share and “drop in” for tea.  We will take care of everything else.

Wednesday, August 21st      Line Dancing Class

1:00 to 2:30   Would you like to learn to line dance?  If so, join us at the Portland Public Library on Wednesday, August 21st  from 1:00 to 2:30 and Patty Gribovicz will instruct you on such dances as the Electric Slide, Boot Scootin’ Boogie and Cotton Eye Joe to name a few.  Patty has been dancing since she was a small child.  She was an instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio for three years.  Using her simple, written instructions, along with her demonstration, you should become versed in the art of line dancing. This is a free event!

Overdue Library Materials?  Relax!  The last Friday of every month has been declared FINE FREE FRIDAY at the Portland Library.  Fines will not be charged for any overdue library materials returned on the last Friday of the month.

 

 

TEEN ACTIVITIES

3:30 to 5:00    The Nintendo Switch will be set up in the Teen Space and will be available for teens in 6th through 12th grade from 3:30 to 5:00.

Thursday, August 15th      Art Attack

4:00 to 5:00   Create a new, goofy design by taking your choice of a calendar, old photograph, painting, or magazine to paint over and add to the original. 

Thursday, August 22nd       Family Feud

4:00 to 5:00    We are breaking into teams to play this hilarious, fast-paced classic TV game show.

 

Thursday, August 29th    Choose your Own Adventure: Project UFO

4:00 to 5:00   Based on the popular 80’s and 90’s Choose Your Own Adventure books, you will be going on an adventure through the galaxy.  You alone are in charge of what happens to earth but be careful.  The wrong decision could leave our planet doomed!
